vAct needs your support during this Asian Heritage Month and beyond

Dear vAct supporters,

As we steadily imagine a post-pandemic world, vAct needs your support during this Asian Heritage Month and beyond.

Even though our mainstage production of Bad Parent has been postponed to the fall (dates TBA soon–stay tuned!), we are keeping busy with our artistic programming. To ensure the continual development and the presentation of even more Asian Canadian performances in Vancouver and beyond by vAct, we are aiming to raise $10,000 this spring.

Help us create more exciting Asian Canadian works for you! On the menu for next season:

MSG New Work Development Lab: New work creation is important to us as always. Moving forward, we are excited to strengthen and lengthen our support to writers and creators alike, by offering seminars on creative writing (with guest instructors) to our participants for a more rounded experience.

Many alumni projects have either gone on to production by vAct or other independent theatres in Vancouver, such as Empire of the Son (Tetsuro Shigematsu/The Cultch), we the same (Sangeeta Wylie/The Cultch), and Courage Now (Manami Hara/Firehall Arts Centre), to name a few.

In addition, starting this season, Managing Artistic Director Derek Chan has been providing continued, in-kind support to our writers even after the program has concluded, as a commitment to foster the next generation of Asian Canadian art makers.

New Performance Initiative: We will be launching a new program next season, where we commission 3 new mini-performances (15 mins and under) in a semi-casual cabaret format. Under the dramaturgical mentorship of Derek (and a guest), this program focuses on providing emerging to mid-career artists opportunities to experiment with form and content within the context of live performance. Encouraging participants to incorporate all the virtual, digital, and alternative creation learnings from the past two years or so, this series celebrates the spirit of artistic wanderlust. So let us all hold hands (metaphorically for now), embark on a new journey, and step into the unknown each evening together in an intimate, semi-casual setting. Candlelight optional.

Mainstage and more: And of course, stay tuned for our soon-to-be announced mainstage production—it’ll be a juicy one! Look out for other free presentations of new works in progress over the season as well!
Did you know that you can make a monthly donation instead? By making a monthly donation, you are sending us an additional message of love, supporting our year-round activities. It also helps us plan further ahead into the future—make a sustained impact on Asian Canadian art today. Every dollar counts!

Thank you for your support and commitment,

Derek Chan 陳嘉昊
